#1 Best J Mount: Winegard DS2000A Universal 22-inch Mount
The Winegard DS2000A Universal 22-inch Mount is our top pick for a Starlink J Mount. The things we like most about this pick is the weather resistant e-coating, and the included 2″ u-bolts that make it easy to secure to the Starlink dish mast . Like most J Mounts, it is fully adjustable. The mast length is 22 inches. This is the little brother of the Winegard DS3000A. If you need a longer mast, go with the DS-3000A. But 18-22 inches is the typical mast length for J Mounts, so save your money and get this if you don’t need the extra length.

It has features that you would expect, including a reversible mast, 18 inch reach, and full angle adjustability. It’s your basic J Mount that will work with Starlink, at a reasonable price point.
White is the only color that this J Mount is available in, which can be a pro or a con depending on your personal preference. The diameter of the mast is 1.5 inches, meaning it will accept the Starlink mast with a little DIY modification. You’ll need to supply a bolt and nut to secure the Starlink mast into position. Alternatively, use a couple of u-bolts to secure the Starlink mast into this J Mount. It’s also a good idea to use some electrical tape to reduce the gap between the pipes for a more secure fit. How To Secure The Starlink Dish To A J Mount
The one downside to using an aftermarket mount with your Starlink dish is that the J Mounts are not designed to perfectly accept the Starlink mast. The diameter of the J Mount tube is slightly larger than comparable OEM Starlink mounts. Also, the OEM Starlink mounts use a spring tab design to secure the dish mast to the mount. Obviously, an aftermarket J Mount will not have the spring tab holes. There are a few recommended ways to work around this problem, and we’ve listed them from easiest to hardest.
Universal Mount Adapter
The easiest way to secure Starlink to an aftermarket J Mount is using an adapter designed just for this task. The Winegard Universal Antenna Mount Adapter was made to fit any J Mount and help secure the mast to the J Mount tube.
Another method to secure the Starlink mast into an aftermarket J Mount is to use U-bolts to clamp the two together. One of the reasons we recommended the Winegard DS2000A in the list above is that it includes u-bolts. We recommend this method because it doesn’t permanently modify either the J Mount or the Starlink dish. You simply use the u-bolts to clamp down with enough pressure to hold the Starlink mast securely.
Depending on the diameter of your J Mount and your version of the Starlink dish (rectangle or round), you may need to use some electrical tape to fill in the gap. In the example above, using the round Starlink and Winegard DS2000A J mount, we didn’t need to use any tape. We simply tightened down the two u-bolts and it was perfectly secure.
Drilling + Bolt
The second method to secure Starlink to an aftermarket J Mount is to drill one or two holes through both the Starlink mast and the J Mount, and then use bolts/nuts to secure the two together. One way to do this would be to utilize the existing holes on the Starlink mast, where the spring tabs are seated. By removing the spring tabs, you are left with about a 1/2 inch hole. Now all you need to do is drill a similar sized hole into the J Mount, and then use bolts, washers, and nuts to secure it.
Drilling + Starlink Spring Tabs
The final method we will go over involves using the original Starlink spring tabs. The idea here is to drill two holes in the J Mount, large enough to allow the Starlink spring tabs to snap into place. The amount of work involved in this method will depend on the type of dish you have. For the round Starlink dish, the process is easier, since the tabs are round. For the rectangular dish, the tabs are more square. You might need to use hand tools or a Dremel tool to get the shape right.
This method may not work if the gap between the J Mount and your Starlink mast is too large. You’ll need a tight enough fit so that the spring tabs can fully lock into your drilled holes on the J mount. The benefit to this method is that no extra hardware is required, and you get more of a clean, OEM look.
How To Mount A J Mount
J Mounts are great because of how versatile they are. They have an adjustable base that can be angled to allow for roof, wall, eave, or virtually any other type of installation. We recommend following the instructions included with the specific J mount that you purchase, since one could vary from the next. But here is a basic approach:
- Select your mounting location. Exterior walls or the eave of your roof are ideal locations. You can mount a J mount directly into your roof, but that should be a last resort due to the potential for leaks. I highly recommend researching roof installation guides if you go that route, we won’t cover waterproofing here
- Select your mounting hardware. For wood surfaces, wood lag screws will do the trick. If mounting to metal, concrete, brick, or another type of material, you’ll need to research the best kind of fastener to use for your specific application
- Lay out the J mount, level, and mark the holes for drilling
- Drill pilot holes for the lag screws (if applicable)
- Secure using lag screws, making sure to check for level and readjust if necessary
- Align the mast so that it is vertical, check with a level
- Tighten angle adjustment nuts on the J mount base plate
- Once the J mount is fully fastened to the surface, and the angle is set and tightened, slide the Starlink dish into place
- Take care to avoid damaging the cable
- Using your preferred method from above, secure the J mount to the Starlink mast
