Nearly five months after going on sale in the United States, our neighbors to the north can finally purchase the Starlink Mini. As if to say sorry for the wait (I couldn’t help myself), Starlink is introducing it with a steep discount compared to other markets.
You can pick up a Starlink Mini for $399 CAD, which is $100 cheaper than the full-size Standard model. The launch discount lasts until January 6th. Pair your Mini with the affordable $70 per month Roam 50GB plan for the ultimate portable internet solution.
The Mini is about the size of a laptop and weighs just a few pounds. But don’t let the small size fool you, it’s capable of around 200 Mbps down, 20 Mbps up, with less than 40 ms of latency based on my review of the Mini. Not to mention it’s extremely power efficient, drawing around 30 watts. But the best part is the integrated Wifi router and power supply. All you need for internet anywhere in the world is the Mini and a power source to plug in to.
Since launching in the US about five months ago, it’s proven to be extremely popular with all kinds of travelers. The Mini doesn’t use much power, so it can be plugged into the 12V outlet in a vehicle, or even a USB-C port. If you follow my blog or YouTube channel, you know I’m a huge fan of the Mini. I’ve done tests where I powered the Mini with a portable power bank, and even mounted it to the glass roof of my Tesla for in motion internet at highway speeds.
The Mini is a prime example of how far SpaceX and Starlink have come since initially launching their internet service four years ago. My original first generation dish weighed over 25 lbs and was large enough to be used as an end table. Now, with the Mini, I can have the same performance from a dish that fits in a backpack.
Just like in the US, the Mini is only available with Starlink’s mobile service plans. If you visit the Roam page on the Starlink website, you’ll have a choice between Roam 50GB and Roam Unlimited. The $70 CAD/month Roam 50GB plan is best for recreational travelers who don’t need much data, while the $189 CAD/month Unlimited plan offers full-time travelers and power users unlimited data.
Both Roam plans offer the same features, like international travel (up to two months), coastal water access, in motion use, and the ability to pause billing for seasonal use.
The Mini initially launched in the United States back in July 2024, nearly five months ago. It quickly spread to other markets around the world, but Canada was left out until now. The US, Canada, and Australia are Starlink’s three largest markets, so it was odd to see the Mini unavailable in Canada.
Supply constraints could explain the delay. The Mini is priced at $599 in the US, a steep premium over the normal dish. Following the initial surge of orders in the first few months, Starlink reduced the price to $449 during the week of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The price is now back to normal with the exception of a brand new Residential + Roam Mini bundle offer that is being sent out to some customers. The recent promotions align with the Mini release in Canada, signaling that Starlink has a stable supply of the ultra-portable dish.
I know many of you have waited months to buy the Mini. I get comments all the time asking if I know when it will be available in Canada. Now I can finally give you an answer!
When will this be available in European Countries ?
